Greening Campuses - Think Globally, Act Locally
Established by Green Course in 2005, the Greening Campuses Project was endorsed by the Ministry of Environment in 2007 with the goal of encouraging academic institutions to adopt environment-friendly management policies. This project sets criteria for campuses for green management and green activities; campuses which qualify receive a Green Campus Label.

Setting the Standard on Campuses
- Reduction in energy: promoting reduction and saving of energy-consumption.
- Waste management: recycling on campus, saving resources and promoting reusing where possible.
- Academic Courses on issues of environmental concern open to all students.
- Running environmental activities in coordination with Green Course and pertaining to the local community: organic garden activities for children in schools, open seminars regarding the environment, producing workshops for soldiers and the general public.
To date, the following academic institutions have already achieved the Green Campus Label :
Beit Berl College, Oranim College, Technion, Rupin College, Facultry of Agriculture in Rehovot, David Yellin College, Sammy Shimon (Be'er Sheva), College Sapir College.
Our goal for the Greening Campuses project during 2009-10 is to enable campuses wishing to adopt environmental policies to do so in a more efficient manner. A coordinator of the project will create a portfolio which will include lessons learned by other campuses; what works, what doesn't and will then give examples of how policies can be most effectively be implemented to campuses attempting to comply with the criteria.
Generating Green Activities on Campus
- Seminars for Green Course volunteer activists to increase effectiveness of Greening Campuses nationally, in conjunction with management of academic institutions.
- Facilitating the absorption of knowledge regarding recycling, energy usage, decreased waste, economic benefits in academic institutions.
- Production and distribution of materials, including Greening Campuses Information Booklet.
- On-campus campaigning aimed at encouraging students to assimilate environment-friendly patterns (Re-use, Reduce, Recycle).
Through implementing the idea of "think globally-act locally", we are promoting greener academic institutions, which in turn, are promoting a more environmentally aware society.
