Green Course is Israel's largest environmental volunteer organization, with over 6,000 student volunteers in 23 chapters on campuses across Israel. Through Green Course, students are active in education and media projects to raise public awareness to environmental issues. Projects include work with schools and youth groups as well as work with students on issues such as greening the campus.
Leadership Training. Promoting the Next Generation of Environmental Leadership With fellows participating from 26 campuses across Israel, the Environmental Leadership Training Program is already having a tremendous impact on Israel's environment. Some of the achievements so far include managing hundreds of environmental projects across Israel, raising awareness and running campaigns for clean air, promoting solutions to the water crisis and to public transportation.
Solid Waste. Every year, approximately 5 million tons of waste is created in Israel alone. When compared to the population growth – the Israeli population grows by 2% annually while the amount of refuse grows by 5% annually. As the country's land dumps can no longer accommodate our growing needs and amounts of waste generation, new measures are necessary.
Clean Air. For years, factories in Haifa’s port have been polluting the air, raising cancer and cardiac ailments levels 23% above the nationwide average. Green Course's campaign for clean air in Haifa’s industrial port area emerges as major project.
Water. The "Red Line" below which pumping water is harmful to the lake is -213M, the “Black Line”, pumping below which causes irreversible damage is -215M. This means that Israel today is below the danger line and approaching the point of no return.
Transportation has a central role in the world we live in with an average 12% of our income being spent on it. Did you know that in the 90s alone the amount of cars in Israel doubled and that since 2000, every year 45,000 vehicles were added to the roads of Israel??
Greening the Campus. Established by Green Course in 2005, the Greening Campuses Project was endorsed by the Ministry of Environment in 2007 with the goal of encouraging academic institutions to adopt environment-friendly management policies.

Gil Ya’acov: Beyond Copenhagen

Edited by Avidan Waldman

Dear Friends,

Copenhagen - Gil Ya'acov

I recently returned from the eventful United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen. Although it seems that the conference was an overall failure on the global level, the Israeli government has made some unprecedented strides. In fact, while actual targets were never declared up till now, President Shimon Peres declared to the world that Israel’s targets are to reduce emissions by 20% by 2020 compared to ‘business as usual’ levels. I have to admit that these promises are miniscule in relation to the required goal of 20% below 2000 levels, yet we take solace in the fact that this is an improvement relative to the government ignoring the issue of climate change until now.

Green Course Calls on Bibi to Act Now

By Avidan Waldman

חנוכה 2009: באר שבע חנוקהOn Sunday, December 13, the third night of Chanukah, Green Course organized protests throughout the country. The slogan used played with the Hebrew word Chanukah “ביבי, ישראל חנוקה!” This translates to “Bibi, Israel is choking!” The protests were to push Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to commit to more emission reducing practises in light of the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen. Green Course volunteers sang songs with Chanukah tunes that were directed towards the Prime Minister.

Protests were held in Ashkelon, Tel Aviv, Be'er Sheva, Haifa, and Jerusalem. Although the message was the same, each individual protest had its own local goals to promote.

Israel Celebrates Chanukah with 1MillionDrops

Dear Friends,

As the Festival of Lights approaches, I encourage you to take part in our 1MillionDrops.org online Campaign. Join us as we bring light to thousands of people we serve here in Israel throughout the 8 days of Chanukah. We’re doing this, in co-operation with 250 other non-profit organizations, by partnering with the 1MillionDrops.org online campaign, where our goal is to collect 1,000,000 virtual drops of oil from people like you from around the world. The oil will keep the Virtual Menorah burning bright throughout Chanukah, and all of the donations collected ($1 dollar is 4 drops) will be donated to non-profit organizations bringing light to thousands of Israelis this holiday season.

You can ensure that your donation is allocated to Green Course by clicking here or on any of the links on the website or in our newsletter. The campaign system will recognize that you arrived at the campaign through Green Course, and all of the funds that you donate will be reserved for Green Course.

All donations made through the campaign are tax-deductible in Israel, the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. Please spread this newsletter around to your friends and family, or post it to your Facebook wall or Twitter feed through the campaign page, and help us fundraise 1 million drops!

This Year In Copenhagen, Next Year In Jerusalem...?

Will Israel Stand Up to the Challenges Ahead?

By Avidan WaldmanCOP15 LOGO

The United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen (COP15) has finally begun (December 7th –18th). Gil Ya’acov, Executive Director of Green Course, will be traveling to Copenhagen as part of the Israeli delegation. Gil is certainly going with high hopes and prepared to be an active participant. Gil represents Green Course’s goals of a solid treaty that will lower world green house gas emissions.

Green Course has constantly been working to grow Israel’s environmental awareness and plant the seeds of change. A recent survey of western countries had Israel placed as the #1 in investment in renewable energy technologies, but dead last in implementation of those technologies within Israel. One of the apparent reasons for this is that under the Kyoto protocol, Israel was considered a developing country despite its advanced position in most categories and its expected acceptance to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). On environmental issues, Israel behaves like a developing country.
