Volunteering @ Green Course
Green Course was started by volunteers, and volunteers fuel its success today.
All our volunteers do it for the same reason; they want to create a better environment in Israel.
Join the front lines of the fight for a better tomorrow in Israel- become a Green Course volunteer!
There are many ways to put your talents to use. You determine your own time commitment...
Jennifer Holzer (USA) volunteered temporarily at Green Course:
"Green Course welcomed me with smiles
and enthusiasm into their national office on Hashfela St. in Tel Aviv, I wanted
to be involved in grassroots environmental organizing in Israel.
On the second day of my internship, I accepted a ride up to the Kinneret from
an Israeli volunteer, with no idea of the kind of event that would be in store
for me that day. We picked an old boat up from a kibbutz garage, and I found
myself standing in murky water in the early morning sun, hooking it up to a
pick-up truck for Green Course's action that day at Jordan Valley College. I spent the
afternoon photographing activists in "Megama" t-shirts alongside
Members of Knesset, who were participating in a pre-election political
debate. Green Course was asking politicians to sign a petition toward the
end of writing legislation to keep all Israel's beaches open to the
public without charge or private fencing.
I spent the next few months in the national office, compiling their
English-language newsletter, updating the English-language website, and
participating in training, campus events and the Green Film Festival. I
was constantly impressed and inspired by the commitment of Green Course's
volunteers, their knowledge of the issues they were organizing around, the
dialogue they promote, the amazing publicity they get on radio and television
whenever they hold a big action, and the optimism and closeness of their
community.
The friends I made while working with Green Course not only have hosted me at
their homes, invited me to Green Course events when I bumped into them on the
street, and taught me Hebrew, we continue to exchange advice on a regular
basis, we share thoughts about environmental issues and work all over the
world, and we ask each other, "When are you coming to visit!?"
I am proud to wear my Megama t-shirt when I go out jogging in San Francisco,
not just so I get to brag about this dynamic, ambitious, effective student
coalition that exists to promote environmental justice in Israel, but because
it reminds me of friends whose opinions I deeply value and who I miss!"
