ביום שבת ה-21.10.23 פרסמה פעילת האקלים גרטה טונברי ציוץ בו הביעה תמיכה בעזה תוך התעלמות מוחלטת מפשעי המלחמה הנוראיים של חמאס כלפי אזרחים ישראלים, ביניהם טבח של נשים, קשישים וילדים, וחטיפת אזרחים. בהמשך, גרטה הוסיפה כי היא “מתנגדת לתקיפות המזעזעות של חמאס”, אך לא התייחסה באופן ישיר לקורבנות הכה רבים, לחטופים, ולעובדה שהיה זה אירוע טרור שבוצע על ידי ארגון טרור.
גרטה היא מובילת דעה מרכזית במאבק הסביבתי הבינלאומי. אין להכחיש את היותה מודל לחיקוי עבור מיליוני צעירות וצעירים, אך עם השפעה כה רחבה מגיעה גם אחריות. לאחר שנחשפנו לדבריה בחרנו בארגון מגמה ירוקה להגיב תוך קריאה לתנועה הסביבתית הבינלאומית לא ללכת בדרכה ולא לעמוד מנגד.
ראשית, אנו מגנים בכל תוקף את עמדתה של גרטה, אשר מוצגת באופן חד צדדי תוך התעלמות מהזוועות אשר ביצע חמאס ב-7.10 , וכן מהעובדה שמאות חטופים חפים מפשע מוחזקים בשבי החמאס עד ליום זה ממש. השמטת עובדות אלה, גם אם מתוך בורות, נותנת לגיטימציה למעשי חמאס ועל כן מנוגדת לערכים הומניסטים בסיסיים ולחתירה אמיתית לשלום.
אנו במגמה ירוקה, כמו רבים מאזרחי ישראל, מאמינים באמונה שלמה בשלום, שוויון, וצדק חברתי-סביבתי. המאבק למטרות אלה לא יכול להתבצע אך ורק דרך הסתכלות צרה על יחסי כוחות, על “טובים” אל מול “רעים”. אלא רק דרך תמיכה אמיתית בחיים הוגנים, צודקים ובטוחים עבור כלל בני האדם באשר הם.
כמו כן, אנו מאמינים בזכותו של העם הפלסטיני להגדרה עצמית, שחלקו קשור גם בצדק אקלימי, אך חמאס לא מייצגים את המאבק הזה בשום אופן. באמנת חמאס על פי תרגום אוניברסיטת ייל נכתב “ישראל תתקיים ותמשיך להתקיים עד שהאיסלאם ישמיד אותה”. לא ייתכן שהמאבק להגדרה עצמית של לאום אחד יקרא להשמדת לאום אחר. בשני הצדדים יש אנשים שרוצים לחיות בשלום ובחופש, יש לבקר ולגנות את אלה אשר דרכם היא הרס ואלימות. חמאס היא ארגון טרור שפגע ופוגע בחייהם של חפים מפשע ולכן יש לגנות אותם בכל צורה ודרך, תוך הבעת סולידריות עם פלסטינים חפים מפשע אשר נפגעים פגיעה קשה מהמלחמה בעזה.
לבסוף, כשם שאנו מתנגדים להפיכה המשטרית ונלחמים למען הדמוקרטיה הישראלית וזכויותיהם של כל מי שחיים כאן לחופש ושיוויון, אנו רואים באחריות של ממשלות נתניהו לחיזוק חמאס כבעלי אחריות על המצב. יש להפריד בין מדיניות הממשלה, לבין האזרחים אשר נטבחו, נחטפו ונפגעו, שהיו חסרי כוח לחלוטין.
אנו מפצירים בתנועה הסביבתית העולמית להשתמש בכוחה ובפלטפורמות שלה כדי לנקוט עמדה ברורה כלפיי מעשי טרור ולגנות את פשעי חמאס, לצד שיפוטה הלגיטימי של המדיניות הישראלית. קדמו חיים בטוחים והוגנים עבור כולנו, לא פשעי מלחמה.
Dear international climate movement,
On Saturday, October 21st, 2023, climate activist Greta Thunberg posted a tweet in which she expressed support for Gaza while completely ignoring the heinous war crimes committed by Hamas against Israeli civilians, which included the slaughtering of women, elderly, and children, as well as the kidnapping of civilians. She later added that she is “against the horrific attacks by hamas.” but did not directly address the many casualties, the abductions, and the fact that it was a terror event carried out by a terrorist organization.
Greta is a central figure and influencer in the international environmental movement. She is a role model for millions of young people, her influence is extensive, but it also comes with a responsibility. After reading Greta’s statements, we at Green course chose to respond by urging the international environmental movement not to follow suit, and to avoid remaining silent.
First, we strongly condemn Greta’s one-sided position, which ignores the horrors committed by Hamas on October 7th, as well as the fact that hundreds of innocent civilians remain in Hamas captivity to this very day. Overlooking these facts, even if sheerly out of ignorance, legitimizes the actions of Hamas and is therefore contrary to basic humanistic values and the genuine desire for peace.
We at Green Course, like many Israeli citizens, believe wholeheartedly in peace, equality, social and environmental justice. However, the struggle for these goals cannot be achieved solely through a narrow perspective on power relations, “good” versus “evil”. Rather, it can only be achieved through true support of fair, just, and safe lives for all people.
We also believe in the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination, which is partly tied in with climate justice. However, Hamas does not represent this struggle in any way. Hamas’s covenant, as translated by Yale University, says, “Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam will obliterate it”. It is not acceptable for the struggle for self-determination of one nation to call for the destruction of another. There are people on both sides who want to live in peace and freedom, those who promote destruction and violence should be criticized and condemned. Hamas is a terrorist organization that has harmed and continues to harm the lives of innocent civilians, and they should be condemned in every way, while expressing solidarity with innocent Palestinians suffering from the war in Gaza.
Finally, as part of the movement that opposes the judicial overhaul in Israel and fights for Israeli democracy and the right to freedom and equality of all people living here, we see the responsibility of Netanyahu’s governments in strengthening Hamas. Government policy must be separated from the citizens who were completely powerless, and yet were murdered, kidnapped, and hurt.
We urge the global environmental movement to use its power and platforms to take a clear stand against acts of terror and condemn Hamas’s crimes, and to promote fair and safe lives for all of us.
